Report: Diamondbacks' Gregorius drawing more interest than Owings

The Arizona Diamondbacks are looking to unload a young infielder on the trade market this winter, and it appears Didi Gregorius is the preferred choice among clubs interested in acquiring a shortstop.

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, the 24-year-old is drawing more interest than teammate Chris Owings, who underwent surgery in October to repair a shoulder injury that forced him to the disabled list for more than two months last season.

Gregorius was acquired from the Cleveland Indians two winters ago and spent the 2013 campaign as Arizona's primary shortstop, but was ultimately usurped last spring by Owings, a first-round pick in 2009. Though Gregorius opened the season at Triple-A, he assumed a regular role with the Diamondbacks in June and eventually took over as the full-time shortstop after Owings landed on the disabled list. He hit .226/.290/.363 with six home runs in 299 plate appearances.

Owings, meanwhile, impressed in his first extended stint with the Diamondbacks, though an extended stint on the disabled list marred his rookie season. The 23-year-old managed 1.8 WAR over 91 games while hitting .261/.300/.406 (95 OPS+) with six home runs and eight stolen bases. He's expected to be ready for spring training.
