Indians' Kluber wins AL Cy Young
Cleveland Indians right-hander Corey Kluber claimed the 2014 American League Cy Young award.
Kluber barely edged out Seattle Mariners right-hander Felix Hernandez, while Chicago White Sox southpaw Chris Sale finished third in voting.
Player (Teams) | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | Points |
---|---|---|---|---|
Kluber (CLE) | 17 | 11 | 2 | 169 |
Hernandez (SEA) | 13 | 17 | 0 | 159 |
Sale (CWS) | 0 | 2 | 19 | 78 |
A former fourth-round pick of the San Diego Padres in 2007, Kluber becomes the fourth Indians pitcher to ever win the award and first since Cliff Lee in 2008.
Kluber, who didn't earn a single vote in 2013, finished the season with an 18-9 record to go with a 2.44 ERA and 269 strikeouts in 235 2/3 innings. The 28-year-old established his dominance following the All-Star break, where he went 9-3 with a 1.73 ERA – the best in the AL – and 0.96 WHIP over 14 starts.
“I wasn’t expecting it," Kluber said. "I definitely thought Felix [Hernandez] was going to win. He had such a great year. I guess I just assumed that who he was and how good of a year he had, and all that kind of stuff, would get him more votes.”
