The Kansas City Royals shocked the world once this year by winning the American League pennant. They could do it again if their interest in star Cuban outfielder Yasmany Tomas materializes into something bigger than a rumor.

Royals general manager Dayton Moore admitted Tomas is someone the club has its eye on.

"We are interested in (Tomas) and other players internationally," Moore said, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Andy McCullough of The Kansas City Star said the Royals met with Tomas's agent Jay Alou this week, but it was unclear what the meeting was about. Alou is also the agent for free-agent pitcher Ervin Santana, among other big leaguers.

It will take a lucrative long-term contract pushing $100 million to sign Tomas, according to multiples reports. He could eclipse the deals signed by recent Cubans Jose Abreu (six years, $68 million) - the American League Rookie of the Year - and Rusney Castillo (seven years, $72.5 million).

The 24-year-old Tomas is younger than both when they signed, and Alou said his power can't be ignored.

€œ"He€™'s got more power than Abreu. He’€™s got a lot more power," Alou said, according to WEEI's Rob Bradford. "Abreu’€™s a little older, more mature with his bat. Sometimes it takes guys longer to figure things out. And the last couple of weeks, a lot of things have clicked for Yasmany. I can tell you he’€™s got a lot more power than anyone I’€™ve ever seen. A lot."

Alou added: "Yasmany Tomas is very, very special. You don’t find that kind of power, and we might not find that kind of power for a while, because the guys with that build, they’re playing in the NFL."

High praise, but Alou also has every reason to publicly pump up his client's value.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reported he has heard the Philadelphia Phillies, San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres have seen Tomas the most during workouts in the Dominican Republic. Heyman said Alou suggested he has already turned down an eight-year offer in favor of a smaller deal that would enable Tomas to reach free agency sooner.

The Phillies are among the favorites, according to Heyman, while the Los Angeles Dodgers are also believed to be involved in the process.
