Cubs' Epstein invites MLB to investigate tampering allegations

Matt Marton / USA TODAY Sports

Theo Epstein believes the Chicago Cubs have nothing to hide.

On the same day that Major League Baseball launched an investigation into whether Joe Maddon's hiring by the Cubs was preceded by tampering, Epstein - Chicago's president of baseball operations - fully invited the inquiry.

"We welcome the MLB investigation," Epstein told Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune. "As we said last week there’s no tampering whatsoever, and I’d rather they investigate so we can clear our names and get this over and move on from this quickly. We’re giving our full cooperation and welcome it."

Epstein and the Cubs have continued to claim both that they didn't know Maddon would opt out of his deal with the Tampa Bay Rays and that they didn't contact him until he was no longer employed by the Rays.
