Reports: Yankees have no plans to pursue Sandoval, Scherzer, Lester, Shields

After spending $450 million in an attempt to plug the holes of a sinking ship last winter, the New York Yankees reportedly won't spend on big-name free agents this offseason.

Mark Feinsand and Bill Madden of the New York Daily News reported that the Yankees have no plans to pursue top-tier free agents Pablo Sandoval, Max Scherzer, Jon Lester and James Shields, but are focusing instead on the likes of pitcher Brandon McCarthy and third baseman Chase Headley.

New York has plenty of salary already committed to next season, with Mark Teixeira, CC Sabathia, Alex Rodriguez, Masahiro Tanaka and Jacoby Ellsbury all set to earn more than $20 million in 2015. Brian McCann and Carlos Beltran are owed $17 million and $15 million respectively, and the Yankees also offered closer David Robertson a one-year, $15.3-million qualifying offer Monday.

The team currently has voids at shortstop and second base (one of which Brendan Ryan could fill internally), and also need one or two starting pitchers.
