Jose Canseco recovering in hospital after shooting himself in hand

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

Former MLB slugger Jose Canseco is back in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Canseco accidentally shot himself in the hand Tuesday afternoon and is recovering in a Las Vegas hospital, according to a local TV station. The shooting took place in Canseco's home and he's been sent to the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, according to police.

Celebrity gossip site TMZ, citing Canseco's fiancee Leila Knight, is reporting that he suffered the injury while cleaning his gun. He wasn't aware the gun was loaded when it accidentally went off, blowing the middle finger off his left hand. Knight also told TMZ that Canseco is undergoing surgery in an attempt to save the finger. Knight later confirmed the surgery via Canseco's Twitter account.

The former six-time All-Star has a history of legal issues, some of which are gun-related. He was arrested in California in 1989 for carrying a semi-automatic pistol in his car. Canseco also has a history of domestic violence and steroid use.
