Torii Hunter would avoid retirement to return to Tigers

Mark L. Baer / USA TODAY Sports

Torii Hunter admitted he was contemplating retirement following the Tigers early postseason exit last week. Now he says he's willing to return to Detroit - if he's wanted.

"If the Tigers want me back, we will work that out hopefully," Hunter told Jason Beck of MLB.com. "Other than that, I'm still thinking about my situation."

The 39-year-old, who is coming off a two-year, $26-million deal, proved he's still an effective major leaguer. In 142 games in 2014, Hunter hit .286/.319/.446 with 17 home runs and 83 RBI.

Should the Tigers go in a different direction, Hunter admitted he's not sure if he would return for a 19th season.

"I don't know," Hunter said. "I'm going to let my mind and body heal for about four weeks."
