2006 - Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle is killed in plane crash
New York Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle and his flight instructor die in a plane crash after the aircraft he was piloting collided with a 50-story building in Manhattan.
"This is a terrible and shocking tragedy that has stunned the entire Yankees organization," team owner George Steinbrenner said in a statement. "I offer my deep condolences and prayers to his wife, Melanie, and son, Christopher, on their enormous loss."
Lidle, who had earned his pilot's license earlier in the year, reportedly planned on flying home to California after the Yankees were eliminated from the postseason by the Detroit Tigers.
"This is a terrible shock," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "I was with Ron Guidry and Lee Mazzilli when I heard the news, and we were just stunned. Cory's time with the Yankees was short, but he was a good teammate and a great competitor. My heart goes out to his family."
Lidle, 34, appeared in 277 games in the majors with the New York Mets, Tampa Bay Rays, Oakland Athletics, Toronto Blue Jays, Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies and Yankees, posting a 82-72 record.
