Yankees GM: 'I'm open to pursuing third base options'

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman reiterated Friday that he doesn't know what to expect from Alex Rodriguez next season and remains willing to consider other possibilities at third base.

"I'm open to pursuing third base options," Cashman told Newsday's Erik Boland shortly after finalizing a three-year extension with the Yankees.

Though manager Joe Girardi affirmed last month that he expects Rodriguez to play third base in 2015, Cashman previously expressed skepticism over the 39-year-old's ability to handle the demands of the position after sitting out the entire 2014 campaign.

A recent report from Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, meanwhile, suggested the Yankees "may have interest" in re-signing Chase Headley, further evidence of the club's skepticism over Rodriguez's ability to play third base in 2015. Cashman, incidentally, has even broached the possibility of changing positions with Rodriguez, a 14-time All-Star.

Rodriguez, who incurred a season-long suspension for his role in the Biogenesis scandal, is set to earn $21 million next season.
