Report: Ryan Dempster retires at 37

Though veteran right-hander Ryan Dempster did not formally retire when he opted to sit out the 2014 season, it now appears the 37-year-old's baseball career is over, according to Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish.

Dempster, who spent parts of 16 seasons in the major leagues, announced in February that he would not play in 2014 due to both personal and physical reasons, forfeiting the $13.25 million remaining on his contract with the Boston Red Sox.

A two-time All-Star, Dempster enjoyed success as both a starter and reliever throughout his career, distinguishing himself as one of just 17 pitchers in history to record at least 100 wins and 85 saves.

Dempster retires with a career 4.35 ERA (98 ERA+) over 351 starts and 228 relief appearances across stints with the Florida Marlins, Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs, Texas Rangers, and Boston Red Sox. Dempster, a British Columbia native, helped the Red Sox secure a World Series championship in 2013.
