Jose Fernandez: (Elbow) Resumes Throwing

Fernandez (elbow) made 25 throws from 30 feet Wednesday and said he felt "great," Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

Analysis:

It represents a positive first step in Fernandez's rehabilitation from Tommy John surgery, which was performed close to 20 weeks ago now, though it goes without saying that he still has several major hurdles to clear. The 22-year-old phenom was off to another incredible start before suffering the injury in May, posting a 2.44 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 70 strikeout in eight outings (51.2 innings). He still has top-five starting pitcher potential, but the uncertainty as to his return date will make him difficult to value at the start of next season, as the Marlins figure to be especially cautious with his recovery.
