The Minnesota Twins wrapped up their fourth straight losing season Sunday, and the team's struggles have finally cost Ron Gardenhire his job.

Minnesota announced Monday that Gardenhire has been relieved of his duties as the club's manager, a position he's held since 2002. Twins executive vice president and general manager Terry Ryan held a press conference Monday afternoon to discuss Gardenhire's dismissal.

Patrick Reusse of the Minneapolis Star Tribune first reported the news.

The Twins finished with a 70-92 record this season, 20 games back of the Detroit Tigers in the American League Central.

Gardenhire, who doesn't intend to close the book on his coaching career, understands the organization's decision.

The Twins have finished in last place in three of the past four seasons and failed to win more than 70 games since it claiming the Central division in 2010.

Twins president Dave St. Peter released a statement via Twitter shortly after the announcement:

The Twins also announced that they will begin the search for Gardenhire's replacement immediately.

Gardenhire, who had one year remaining on a two-year deal signed last season, managed the club to six playoff appearances, including three straight to begin his reign.

The 56-year-old compiled a 1068-1039 (.507) regular-season record during his tenure, but was just 6-21 in the playoffs. Only former manager Tom Kelly had more wins as a Twins skipper.

Gardenhire won AL Manager of the Year in 2010, when the team went 94-68 en route to its second straight division title, and finished runner-up for the honor five times between 2003-09.

The Twins won the Central in six of Gardenhire's 13 seasons, making it as far as the ALCS in his inaugural season. They lost that series in five games to the Anaheim Angels.
