(SportsNetwork.com) - The San Francisco Giants will be playing their wild card game on the road, but first will try to finish business with the San Diego Padres Saturday in the continuation of a four-game series at AT&T Park.
The Giants have stumbled down the stretch with nine losses in the last 13 games, and dropped a 4-1 decision to the Padres Friday night.
Ryan Vogelsong labored through 5 1/3 innings and gave up four runs -- three earned -- and six hits. Brandon Belt finished with two hits and a run scored for San Francisco, which was coming off Thursday's 9-8 victory.
The Giants clinched their third postseason appearance in five years on Thursday, but will have to play on the road in the single elimination wild card round. San Francisco will visit either St. Louis or Pittsburgh.
"We've played well on the road," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "We knew we had to run this one out to get the home-field game that we were looking for. It is encouraging that we have done a good job on the road."
Jake Peavy gets the call for Bochy's club on Saturday and he will face the Padres for the first time in his career. Peavy won the Cy Young Award in 2007 as a member of San Diego, where he spent 2002 through parts of 2009. The right-hander is 6-4 with a 2.20 ERA in 11 starts with the Giants after coming over in a trade with Boston.
San Francisco has won each of Peavy's last five starts and he is 4-0 in that time. He did not record a decision in Monday's 5-2 win at Los Angeles and tossed seven innings of two-run ball.
The Padres are playing well at season's end with nine wins over the past 12 contests. In Friday's victory by the bay, Ian Kennedy threw seven strong innings and gave up an unearned run to finish with an even 13-13 mark.
"When he turns the ball loose, it comes out good," said Padres manager Bud Black of Kennedy.
Rene Rivera had two hits and two RBI, Seth Smith went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored and Will Venable had two hits in the win.
Eric Stults gets the nod for the Padres Saturday and is a disappointing 8-17 with a 4.42 earned run average. Stults has won two of his last three starts and delivered 6 1/3 scoreless innings in Monday's 1-0 win over Colorado.
Stults is only 3-10 in 17 road starts and 8-5 with a 4.94 ERA in 20 career games (18 starts) against the Giants.
The Padres are 10-7 against the Giants this season.
