Cubs' Castro to miss rest of season with ankle injury

Matt Marton / USA TODAY Sports

Chicago Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro won't take the field again this season due to the high ankle sprain that has sidelined him for the last three weeks, manager Rick Renteria told MLB.com on Tuesday.

Castro has yet to appear in a game since hurting his ankle while sliding into home plate during a game against the Milwaukee Brewers on Sept. 2. The 24-year-old was eager to beat the four-week prognosis he received, but Renteria admitted Tuesday he will not play again in 2014.

Castro, a three-time All-Star, hit .292/.339/.438 (114 OPS+) with 14 home runs and 33 doubles through 134 games this season, his fewest since his rookie season.
