Martin sinks Brewers for 2nd in series

Charles LeClaire / USA TODAY Sports

Pittsburgh, PA - It was Russell Martin again.

Martin stroked an RBI single in the seventh inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Milwaukee Brewers 1-0 on Sunday to win their key three-game series.

Martin's hit scored Andrew McCutchen and came two days after he hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the eighth inning of Friday's series opener.

The Pirates took two of three games in the set, extending their lead to 4 1/2 games over Milwaukee for the second NL wild card.

They entered play trailing San Francisco by a game for the top wild-card spot and 3 1/2 games behind St. Louis for the NL Central lead with the Giants and Cardinals playing games later on.

Milwaukee, which snapped a three-game winning streak with a win on Saturday, had three baserunners in the ninth inning but couldn't score.
