Chicago White Sox (70-84) at Tampa Bay Rays (75-80), 1:40 p.m. (ET)

(SportsNetwork.com) - Now that the playoffs are out of the question, it's audition time for the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Rays had reached the playoffs in four of the previous six seasons before this year, and they'll continue to play out the string with the finale of a three-game series on Sunday afternoon against the Chicago White Sox at Tropicana Field.

Nathan Karns gets the start for the Rays with a chance to leave an impression before spring training of 2015.

Karns was 0-1 and compiled a 7.50 earned run average in three starts for Washington last season, then made his Tampa Bay debut with seven scoreless innings and eight strikeouts in a 1-0 defeat of Toronto on Sept. 12.

"Any time you can pitch in the big leagues, you can't take it for granted," he said. "I would definitely say this, to me, is a little bit more special."

Karns was 9-9 with a 5.08 earned run average in 27 starts at Tampa Bay's Triple-A affiliate this season.

"That really exceeded expectations," Rays manager Joe Maddon said.

Chicago replies with veteran John Danks, who's lost four straight starts against the Rays with a 6.37 ERA, including a 4-0 decision on April 26.

The White Sox have lost eight straight starts by Danks, who tossed six scoreless innings of two-hit ball against Kansas City in a game Chicago lost, 4-3, on Monday. Danks left with a 3-0 lead.

Veteran Paul Konerko is 0-for-5 in the series against the Rays as he enters the final week of games before retiring. He'd been shelved with a broken hand before returning earlier this week.

"I can still feel (pain) in there a little bit," he said. "I'm happy I'm back right now."

On Saturday, Nick Franklin hit a two-run homer to lead the Rays to a 3-1 victory over Chicago.

Ben Zobrist finished 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI and Yunel Escobar scored a run for the Rays.

Chris Archer (10-8) surrendered just two hits with four walks and three strikeouts to earn the win.

Conor Gillaspie drove in a run and Jose Abreu and Avisail Garcia each had a hit for Chicago, which mustered just three hits.

Hector Noesi (8-10) gave up all three runs on six hits and three walks over six innings in defeat.

The White Sox won three of four over a visiting Rays club from April 25-28.
