Rangers' Andrus admits he 'didn't focus' on his offseason preparation

Sitting in the basement of the American League West for the majority of the season, Texas Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus has had plenty of time to reflect on what's gone wrong in 2014.

The 26-year-old is soon set to put an end to the worst statistical season of his six-year career and acknowledged that it was his lack of preparation during the offseason that proceeded his discouraging season.

“I’m disappointed for sure in both parts of the game,” Andrus told the Dallas Morning News in regards to his slip both defensively and speed on the bases. “I think it all came from the same reason. It was my preparation. I didn’t focus on it. It takes something out of your game when you don’t. I didn’t do what I needed to do. I hate excuses. I have to take all the responsibility.”

Andrus, who owns a career-low .262 average and .314 on-base percentage in 151 games this season, arrived at Spring Training weighing 218 pounds. The Rangers plan to monitor the two-time All-Star more closely this offseason and hope to have report next spring at a more healthy 195-200 pounds.

“I’m going to be proactive in following with him,” said strength and conditioning coach Jose Vazquez. “I will do more on my end to make sure things get done. I expect he will do more on his part. He made a mistake last year. I think he realizes that. It would be stupid to make a mistake like that again.”

Andrus' eight-year, $120-million extension kicks in next season, so it's not surprising the Rangers would expect to get the most out of their investment.
