Red Sox's Castillo goes 1-for-4 in MLB debut

Charles LeClaire / USA TODAY Sports

Boston Red Sox outfielder Rusney Castillo made his much-anticipated MLB debut on Wednesday night at PNC Park, going 1-for-4 in a lopsided 9-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Cuban defector unleashed a scorching ground ball that was too hot for Pirates second baseman Neil Walker to handle in the fourth inning to collect his first big-league hit.

Although 1-for-4 is hardly an impressive stat line, the 27-year-old made contact in each at bat, grounding out twice and producing a lazy fly ball to center field.

"For his debut, he didn't look overwhelmed or overmatched," manager John Farrell said following the loss.

The Red Sox inked Castillo, who quickly progressed through three minor league levels en route to the bigs, to a seven-year, $72.5 million deal on Aug. 23.
