The Rusney Castillo era in Boston officially begins Wednesday.

The 27-year-old Cuban defector has been fast-tracked through the minor leagues after inking a seven-year, $72.5-million deal with the Red Sox in late August.

In 10 appearances spread across three minor-league levels, Castillo hit .297/.381/.405 with four doubles and four RBIs while striking out seven times.

“He’s handled himself well,” manager John Farrell told Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe. “His at-bats have been productive, they’ve been consistent. I think it’s important for us to keep in mind and keep perspective that it’s been a year and half and he’s just getting back into game shape.”

Farrell acknowledged that just because Castillo will join the roster, doesn't mean that he'll receive the bulk of the playing time in center field.

“I don’t expect him to be an everyday player here. He’s going to get games played, that’s for sure,” Farrell said. “But we have other guys here as well. We’ll strike a balance with that.”
