Playoff Picture: Mariners fall out of wild-card spot with extra-innings loss to Athletics

Here's a look at how Saturday's slate affected the playoff picture in the majors:
American League
- The Orioles fell to the Yankees and the Blue Jays defeated the Rays, so Baltimore's magic number remains at five to clinch the American League East.

- Alex Avila launched a two-run home run in the eighth inning to give the Tigers a come-from-behind victory over the Indians. The Royals cruised to a win over the Red Sox backed by a strong eight-inning effort from starter Jeremy Guthrie.
- Mike Trout hit two home runs to lift the Angels to a 10th straight win and drop their magic number to four games to clinch the American League West.

- The Athletics and Royals picked up victories to maintain their holds on the two wild-card spots, and the Blue Jays were also victorious to keep pace.
- The Mariners and Indians, however, both drop a game in the standings with losses. Seattle spoiled a strong effort from staff ace Felix Hernandez and fell in 10 innings to the A's when closer Fernando Rodney walked in the winning run.
National League
- A Nationals win over the Mets combined with a Braves loss to the Rangers results in Washington's magic number falling from eight to six to clinch the National League East.

- The Cardinals expanded their lead to 3 1/2 games in the division with a win over the Rockies, while the Pirates and Brewers both dropped games with losses to the Cubs and Reds, respectively.
