Orioles sweep doubleheader with Yankees; reduce magic number to 5

The Baltimore Orioles are closing in on their first pennant in 17 seasons. After getting swept in Friday's doubleheader, the New York Yankees might be headed for their third straight year missing the playoffs.

Bud Norris delivered his best performance of the year in Friday's nightcap, tossing seven scoreless innings with a season-high 10 strikeouts to lead the Orioles to a 5-0 win at Camden Yards.

The Orioles right-hander followed up a strong effort from Game 1 starter Kevin Gausman, who also blanked the Yankees over seven frames before Jimmy Paredes' pinch-hit, walk-off heroics in the 11th.

It was a day of peaks and valleys for the Orioles, who learned they'll be without 2013 home run king Chris Davis for the next 25 games after the slugger tested positive for amphetamines.

Hours after the announcement, Baltimore scored a minor victory when it was reported Major League Baseball will allow the team to place Davis on its roster for the American League Championship Series should the Orioles advance that far.

The Orioles hardly seemed fazed by Friday's news, however, extending their winning streak to six games and lowering their magic number to win the AL East to five.
