Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz was held out of Friday's lineup against the Kansas City Royals with a sore foot, according to the Boston Globe.
The injury is not believed to be serious and the slugger is listed as day-to-day.
Prior to the series opener, Ortiz offered words of encouragement to the first-place Royals, who hold a half-game edge over the Detroit Tigers in the American League Central entering play Friday.
Despite posting his lowest hitting rates since the 2009 season, Ortiz is on the verge of making franchise history.
With one more run batted in, Ortiz will set a team record with his eighth 30-homer, 100-RBI season.
