Orioles' Chris Davis apologizes after receiving 25-game suspension for amphetamine use

The Baltimore Orioles will be without first baseman Chris Davis for the remainder of the regular season after the 28-year-old received a 25-game suspension on Friday due to a positive test for amphetamines, the league announced.

With just 17 games remaining in the regular season, Davis' suspension will extend into the playoffs, a significant blow for a team already beset by the absence of third baseman Manny Machado and catcher Matt Wieters.

Davis previously had a therapeutic-use exemption for Adderall, a popular pharmaceutical amphetamine, but tested positive for the drug this season without permission, prompting an apology from the 2013 home run champion.

"I apologize to my teammates, coaches, the Orioles organization and especially the fans," Davis said. "I made a mistake by taking Adderall. I had permission to use it in the past, but do not have a therapeutic-use exemption (TUE) this year. I accept my punishment and will begin serving my suspension immediately."

Davis earned his first career All-Star berth with his superb performance in 2013, but regressed considerably this season, hitting just .196/.300/.404 (97 OPS+) with 26 home runs and 173 strikeouts through 127 games.
