Report: Diamondbacks fire GM Kevin Towers

The Arizona Diamondbacks have fired general manager Kevin Towers, according to Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic.

Towers, who was hired at the end of the 2010 season, enjoyed early success with the club, guiding the team to a 94-win season in 2011, but the team won just 81 games each of the next two.

This season, the team lost 22 of their first 30 games, and were essentially eliminated from playoff contention by the end of May. They currently sit 4th in the National League West with a 59-81 record.

The Diamondbacks made a significant move in the front office this season. hiring Tony La Russa as the team's Chief Baseball Officer. Many believed at the time that a shakeup with both the GM and manager Kirk Gibson would occur, but nothing was done until now.

During his tenure in the desert, Towers traded outfielder Justin Upton to the Atlanta Braves in the 2013 season for a package that included Martin Prado and Randall Delgado. He traded away pitchers Ian Kennedy and Trevor Bauer, along with Tyler Skaggs and outfielder Adam Eaton, and took a chance on Cody Ross and Mark Trumbo, both who have failed to work out.
