Brewers' Braun not in lineup Thursday vs. Cardinals

The Milwaukee Brewers will attempt to halt an eight-game slide without one of their top bats Thursday night against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Braun, who is hitting .275 with 18 home runs and 77 RBIs, left the club Wednesday for the birth of his first child and is expected to return to duty Friday.
The Brewers will also be without Carlos Gomez due to a wrist injury.
Milwaukee enters play Thursday just a half-game up on the Atlanta Braves for the second and final National League wild-card spot.
