Angels' Shoemaker named AL Pitcher, Rookie of the Month

Los Angeles Angels right-hander Matt Shoemaker was rewarded for his recent run of dominance Wednesday, earning American League Pitcher and Rookie of the Month honors for August.

The 27-year-old rookie struck out 38 in 41 1/3 innings last month, limiting opponents to a .178 batting average and 1.31 ERA. 

Shoemaker, coming off three straight outings without allowing an earned run, also chipped in with three scoreless frames of relief in the Angels' 5-4 19-inning win over Boston.

The Tigers' designated hitter slashed .350/.442/.547 with six homers, five doubles and 19 walks to just seven strikeouts.

Bumgarner dominated in August, turning in his best month of the season by striking out 56 in 46 innings and pitching to a 1.57 ERA in six starts. The lefty also threw arguably the second-best outing of the year.

Pittsburgh's super utility man launched four homers and clubbed an impressive 12 doubles with a .602 slugging percentage for the month.

In just his second month in the league, Hendricks allowed seven earned runs in 37 1/3 innings. The 24-year-old right-hander went undefeated in August, pitching to a 1.69 ERA in six starts.
