Terry Collins on Mets' 6 errors: 'It's not a big-league baseball game'

The New York Mets have lost 12 of 19 and are in danger of finishing last in the National League East for the first time since 2003, but their recent run of futility nearly reached historic levels Monday.

Manager Terry Collins called out his club following their latest dud, a 9-6 error-filled loss to the Miami Marlins that shrunk the Mets' lead over the last-place Philadelphia Phillies to just half a game.

Via Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com:

“I’m not sure I can say it publicly,” Collins said about sharing his true thoughts on the error total. “It wasn’t just that. A lot of phases of the game weren’t very good.”

Asked if the performance was an embarrassment, Collins added: “Well, it’s not a big-league baseball game.”

The error total fell one shy of matching the franchise record. Three of Monday’s errors came in a decisive three-run eighth inning in which the Marlins produced only one hit.

...

Regardless, Collins concluded, the team’s underwhelming performance was the result of lack of execution, not something more sinister.

“There’s no lack of effort,” Collins said.

With 24 games remaining, the Mets need to post an 11-13 record or better to exceed their 74-win total from each of the last two seasons.
