The Houston Astros have parted ways with manager Bo Porter.

Bench coach Dave Trembley was also let go, the club announced

General manager Jeff Luhnow released a statement thanking Porter for his almost two years as manager, but said the team needs a change in leadership.

Bo’s passion and energy are unparalleled, and his desire to win unquestioned. This decision was not made because of our current level of competitiveness in the Major Leagues. I recognize that our win-loss record is largely a product of an organizational strategy for which I am responsible. Rather, I made this decision because I believe we need a new direction in our clubhouse.

What we will seek going forward is a consistent and united message throughout the entire organization. It is essential that as an organization we create an atmosphere at the major-league level where our young players can come up and continue to develop and succeed. Ultimately, I am responsible for creating that culture, and I will do everything in my power to do so – even when it means making difficult moves like the one we made today.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported last week that Porter and Luhnow were at odds due to a lack of communication. Porter believed that there was a shortage of confidence in his decisions coming from upper management.

The Astros hired Porter prior to the 2013 season, and the 42-year-old rookie manager finished the season with a 51-111 record. Houston entered Monday with a 59-79 record, their highest win total in four seasons.

The Houston Chronicle's Evan Drellich has more on Lawless, who takes over for Porter for the rest of the month, and Adam Everett, who takes over as bench coach for Trembley:

Lawless, who has nearly 35 years experience in baseball as a player or a minor league manager and coach, was an interim manager at Class AAA Oklahoma City earlier this season. Everett spent parts of 11 seasons in the Majors as a shortstop and rejoined the Astros organization as a minor league infield instructor in 2013.

Astros owner Jim Crane echoed Luhnow's statement in his own:

This was not an easy decision to make. We wish Bo nothing but the best in the future. Jeff [Luhnow] has my full support moving forward. Our goal to bring a championship to Houston remains.

In the end, Porter's dismissal continues a trend in Houston:
