White Sox slugger Adam Dunn traded to Athletics

The Oakland Athletics have acquired designated hitter Adam Dunn from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for minor-league pitcher Nolan Sanburn, the team announced Sunday.

Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported earlier that Dunn was willing to waive his no-trade clause to join the American League wild-card leaders. The San Francisco Giants were also rumored to be interested in his services.

Dunn, who is a free agent at the end of the season, promises to help an ailing Oakland offense that ranks 20th in runs scored for the month of August.

The 34-year-old slugger is hitting .220/.340/.433 with 20 homers across 435 plate appearances this season. Dunn figures to see most of his time versus right-handers, who he has an OPS (.808) against over 200 points higher than lefties.

The Athletics will likely deploy Dunn at DH with the occasional start at first in an effort to bolster a lineup that's lacked pop since the departure of Yoenis Cespedes.

Dunn is in the final year of a four-year $56 million deal he signed with the White Sox as a free agent in 2010. He has roughly $2.5 million remaining on his $15 million salary this season.

Sanburn, a second-round pick in the 2012 draft, pitched to a 3.28 ERA and 1.44 WHIP over 42 relief appearances for Class-A Stockton this season. The 23-year-old right-hander has 73 strikeouts in 71 1/3 innings.
