Report: Giants file official protest over rainy loss at Wrigley

The San Francisco Giants reportedly filed a protest with Major League Baseball following Tuesday night's 2-0 loss at Wrigley Field.

A 15-minute rainstorm essentially flooded the infield in the fifth inning, leaving Wrigley unplayable because the grounds crew couldn't get the tarp out in a timely manner.

A source confirmed to CSN's Andrew Baggarly that the Giants went through the appropriate channels to file paperwork with the league, despite the interpretation of the rule in question leaving them no real loophole for consideration.

MLB cited official Baseball Rule 4.12(a)(3) on suspended games, which states:
(a) A game shall become a suspended game that must be completed at a future date if the game is terminated for any of the following reasons:
(3) Light failure or malfunction of a mechanical field device under the control of the home club. (Mechanical field device shall include automatic tarpaulin or water removal equipment.)

"We are going to confirm that we have filed a protest but are going to hold off on discussing any specifics," the source said, via text message.

The loss puts the Giants 4.5 games back of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West, and tied with the Atlanta Braves for the second wild-card spot.
