Pirates claim John Axford off trade waivers from Indians

The Pittsburgh Pirates made a roster move Thursday to improve their bullpen depth for a playoff push.
Axford will likely fill the void left by Ernesto Frieri, who tanked after being acquired from the Los Angeles Angels in late June.
Mark Melancon has a firm hold on the closer job, but Axford should see time in high-leverage situations in the seventh and eighth innings.
The 31-year-old was 2-3 with a 3.92 ERA and 10 saves in 49 appearances with Cleveland.
