The Oakland Athletics have reportedly completed a blockbuster trade with the Boston Red Sox, acquiring left-hander Jon Lester and Jonny Gomes in exchange for Yoenis Cespedes, according to WEEI's Alex Speier.

Yahoo's Jeff Passan, who first reported Lester had been dealt, said Boston will also receive a competitive balance pick from Oakland, with cash going the other way.

Lester, 30, is a free agent at the end of the season and previously said he would be open to returning to Boston. Gomes will also be a free agent at the end of the year.

Cespedes is under contract through 2015 at a salary of $10.5 million and should flourish as a right-handed power bat at Fenway Park. The 28-year-old outfielder is hitting .256/.303/.464 with 17 homers and 26 doubles this year.

Oakland, meanwhile, bolsters an already strong starting rotation featuring Jeff Samardzija, Sonny Gray, Jason Hammel and Scott Kazmir. Despite pitching most of the year in the National League, Samardzija's combined ERA gives the Athletics three pitchers in the American League's top 10.

Lester, in the midst of one of the best years of his career, was one of the few top arms believed to be available on the trade market. His 2.52 ERA and 2.62 FIP are both the lowest figures of his career, while the lefty is walking fewer batters (5.5 percent rate) than ever before.

Cespedes, who signed a four-year, $36 million deal with Oakland as an amateur free agent in 2012, has a provision in his contract that allows him to skip arbitration and enter the open market.

The 33-year-old Gomes helps supplement the loss of Cespedes, though his value mostly rests in his ability to hit lefties well. Gomes' splits (.151/.236/.258 vs. righties compared to .302/.400/.431 vs. southpaws) plays well with Athletics outfielder Josh Reddick, who is better suited to hit right-handers.
