The Miami Marlins prefer to have control of any added assets to the club, but they're not entirely ruling out a rental with the trade deadline around the corner.

A source revealed to Juan C. Rodriguez of the Sun Sentinel that the Marlins are "not completely" out of the race for Boston Red Sox left-hander Jon Lester.

President of baseball operations Michael Hill said the team won't be foolish or short-sighted in its pursuit of an arm to upgrade the rotation. He's also been adamant about not taking away from the club's big-league roster to get what he wants.

"We're trying to add," Hill said. "To re-shuffle or rob Peter to pay Paul doesn't really accomplish what we're trying to do."

Rodriguez writes the team is unlikely to deal a young starter like Andrew Heaney for two months in exchange for such a rental player.

The Marlins play the third game of a three-game series against the Washington Nationals on Wednesday afternoon. The Fish took the first two, moving them to just five games back in the NL East at 53-53, and just four back of the second wild card berth.
