It was a Tuesday night, a battle between two last-place clubs with a combined 86 wins, and the Colorado Rockies and Chicago Cubs ended up making history at Wrigley Field.

The game began at 7:07 p.m. CT, and ended at 1:34 a.m. CT Wednesday morning. Six-and-a-half hours of brilliant baseball (6:27, to be precise), thanks mostly to Rockies outfielder Charlie Blackmon, who kept the game going in the 10th with this stupendous catch

It was the longest game in the history of both franchises, and in the history of 100-year-old Wrigley Field.

The Cubs won the game 4-3 in 16 innings. Chicago catcher John Baker pitched the top of the 16th, facing only three Rockies hitters (he induced a pop up, walked a batter, and then watched his teammates turn a double play). Baker then led off the bottom of the 16th with a walk, and eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Starlin Castro.

So, yes, Baker, a catcher, got the win, becoming the first position player in Cubs history to do so, and scored the winning run.

Baseball: you never know what you're going to get.
