Robinson Cano on participation in Home Run Derby: 'No chance'

Troy Taormina / USA TODAY Sports

American League Home Run Derby captain Jose Bautista has been turned down again by a potential slugger to join his team, this time by Robinson Cano.

"No chance," Cano told the Pioneer Press when asked if he would participate in the Home Run Derby. "I don't want to say I'm retired (from derbies) because I'm too young, but I'm not going to do it this year."

The Seattle Mariners slugger also revealed Bautista reached out to him, but he respectfully declined.

"I said I don't want to do it this year," Cano added. "I want to relax. I want to take a break after doing it for the last three years. It's good to take a break and let some other guys do it."

Unlike some of the other potential candidates, Cano is not worried about the derby screwing up his regular swing.

"I'm not a home run guy," Cano said. "I'm just a guy that has a natural swing. I can hit line drives, but I don't change my swing."

Cano was the derby champ in 2011 at Chase Field when he prevailed over Adrian Gonzalez in the final, but has failed to reach the second round in each his past two attempts.

Mike Trout, Jose Abreu, and Miguel Cabrera have also declined invitations.
