Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story will likely miss the remainder of the season with a fractured glenoid in his shoulder that requires surgery, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow announced Tuesday, according to the Boston Globe's Alex Speier.

The expected timetable is six months, Breslow said. The executive added Story's prognosis for a full recovery is "excellent," according to Speier.

Story injured his shoulder on a diving attempt during Friday's game against the Los Angeles Angels. He was initially diagnosed with a shoulder subluxation.

Breslow said the Red Sox will give internal options an opportunity at shortstop with Story unavailable. Boston has Pablo Reyes and David Hamilton on its roster, as well as injured infielder Vaughn Grissom. Outfielder Ceddanne Rafaela also has experience at shortstop.

"It makes sense to let this play out a little bit," Breslow said.

Story was slashing .226/.294/.323 with four RBIs in eight contests this season. He's appeared in 145 games since signing a six-year, $140-million contract with Boston before the 2022 campaign.

The Red Sox also placed right-hander Nick Pivetta on the 15-day injured list Tuesday and are without Grissom, Lucas Giolito, and Liam Hendriks, among others.
