The Boston Red Sox placed right-hander Nick Pivetta on the 15-day injured list with a right elbow flexor strain, the team announced Tuesday.

The move is retroactive to April 6.

Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said Pivetta's strain is "mild" and the pitcher could return when eligible, according to The Boston Globe's Pete Abraham.

Pivetta was off to a solid start for the Red Sox, authoring a 0.82 ERA with 13 strikeouts in 11 innings across two starts.

The 31-year-old, who has a history of clean health, is the latest pitcher to land on the IL with an elbow issue, joining Gerrit Cole, Spencer Strider, and Shane Bieber, among others.

Boston is also missing starter Lucas Giolito (elbow) and shortstop Trevor Story, who'll undergo a surgical procedure to repair a fractured shoulder glenoid on Friday. Story's recovery timetable is six months.

Chase Anderson and Cooper Criswell are starting options for the Red Sox with Pivetta out of action, Breslow said, according to The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey.

The Red Sox recalled Brennan Bernardino from Triple-A to take Pivetta's spot on the active roster.
