Giants place Gaudin on DL; Zito to start Wednesday

The San Francisco Giants have placed pitcher Chad Gaudin on the disabled list with carpal tunnel syndrome, the club announced on Twitter. Barry Zito will take Gaudin's spot in the rotation, and start Wednessday, the club added

Gaudin has a 3.06 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in 30 games -- 12 of them starts -- and 97 innings this season. He's allowed 81 hits, struck out 88, and walked 40.

The Giants are Gaudin's 10th team in 11 seasons, and his DL stint comes in the midst of what is a career season. He's making $750,000 this year and is headed for free agency.

Zito has a 5.34 ERA and 1.69 WHIP in 116 1/3 innings this season. Batters have teed off on him, hitting .315 on the year.

Zito is 5-6 in 14 career starts against the Red Sox, with a 5.12 ERA and 1.52 WHIP.

It was a busy Tuesday afternoon for the San Francisco Giants, who announced a number of roster moves. The club's also called up pitchers Mike Kickham and Jean Machi from Triple-A Fresno.

Kickham's appeared in five games -- three of them starts -- for the Giants this season, and has a 10.61 ERA and 2.04 WHIP in 18 2/3 innings. He's been making progress in the minors, though.

Kickham, 24 and left-handed, was ranked the sixth-best prospect in the Giants' system -- "He has the ceiling of a No. 4 starter" -- by FanGraphs back in December.

Machi has a 3.34 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 35 innings of relief this season.
