Nationals release relievers Nathan, Albers despite strong spring

Jasen Vinlove / USA TODAY Sports

A pair of veteran relievers looking to land with the Washington Nationals will have to search elsewhere for employment this season.

The Nationals announced Monday they have released Joe Nathan and Matt Albers despite both providing solid performances this spring.

Nathan posted a 3.86 ERA to go with nine strikeouts over 11 2/3 innings, but did allow 15 hits. He was told that the team liked his performance, but just didn't have room in the bullpen, according to Jamal Collier of MLB.com.

Albers was excellent with the Nationals, tossing 11 2/3 shutout innings while fashioning a 1.11 WHIP over 10 appearances.
