Padres' Tyrell Jenkins: Will compete for starting job

Jenkins (elbow) will compete for one of the Padres' final two starter spots, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Analysis:

Jenkins went on a carousel of getting DFA'd and claimed this offseason, but the Padres decided to take a chance on the former top prospect. Manager Andy Green has already told the young pitcher to "go back to being an athlete," implying that the Braves tried tinkering with his delivery too much. Jenkins will compete for one of the Padres' final spots in the rotation, but he could also make the 25-man roster as a long or middle reliever as well. Even if he makes the club as a starter, he will have to show immediate improvement over last year's 5.88 ERA before fantasy owners take notice.
