Report: Athletics showing interest in Trumbo

The Oakland Athletics aren't ruling out having a go at heavy-hitting free agent Mark Trumbo.

After missing out on the Edwin Encarnacion sweepstakes, the Athletics have reached out to the reigning American League home run king, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports.

While it might seem like a long shot, it's impossible to completely rule out the A's as a potential suitor given they were one of the teams that went in hard on Encarnacion.

Oakland offered the slugger a two-year deal worth $50 million, but Encarnacion instead accepted a three-year, $60-million deal with the Cleveland Indians.

It's unclear how interested the A's are in Trumbo, and while it would make sense, the only thing that could conceivably hold him back is the sheer size of the Oakland Alameda Coliseum.

A total of 149 home runs were belted out of Oakland in 2016, the least in the American league.

That being said, the idea of Trumbo and Khris Davis in a batting order can prove to be a lucrative selling point for the A's should they look to acquire another player.

In 2016, Trumbo smacked 47 home runs for the Baltimore Orioles, while driving in 108 runs.

The Colorado Rockies also appear to have interest in Trumbo, despite spending big money on Ian Desmond.
