Report: Cardinals 'floated' around Wacha in trade talks

After losing his spot in the rotation, Cardinals right-hander Michael Wacha could be on his way out of St. Louis entirely.

The Cardinals have reportedly floated around Wacha's name in trade talks, though it could be tough to receive any value in return due to his shoulder issues and struggles last season, sources told Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Still only 25, Wacha already has four major-league seasons and 491 innings under his belt. He went 24-14 with a 3.21 ERA and 1.19 WHIP across 64 appearances (58 starts) through the first three seasons but was struck by injury in 2016.

Wacha posted a 4.45 ERA over his first 23 starts before missing more than a month with shoulder inflammation. He'd return only to allow 13 runs over his next 6 2/3 innings, finishing his year off with a career-worst 5.09 ERA in 138 innings.

With Carlos Martinez, Adam Wainwright, Mike Leake, Jaime Garcia, and Lance Lynn penciled into the rotation, Wacha will likely be deployed in relief - an area in which he was used four times last season.

Wacha is under team control through the 2019 season and is projected to earn $3.2 million in salary arbitration this winter by MLB Trade Rumors
