The best play from Gold Glove nominees at each position

Major League Baseball's award season officially got underway Tuesday night when the Gold Glove recipients were announced.

Each position on the diamond had three nominees per league, and all 54 nominated players were deserving, thanks to their stellar work with the leather.

While only a select few could win the award, here's a look at some of the best plays of the season from each position among the nominees.

P: Verlander's no-look stab

This Justin Verlander no-look grab on a Mike Napoli comebacker would make Patrick Roy proud. Verlander, also a finalist for the AL Cy Young, excelled at fielding his position thanks to making not-so-easy plays like this.

C: Salvy's slide

This is why Salvador Perez already has three Gold Gloves to his name. Despite a slow reaction, Perez managed to make a sensational sliding catch with almost no space between him and the backstop, securing a Royals victory.

First Base: Rizzo walks the ledge

Anthony Rizzo has no fear. He's done this before with a tarp, but vaulting onto the brick ledge at Wrigley Field while reaching into the stands is a whole new level of ridiculous.

Second Base: LeMahieu from RF

DJ LeMahieu, a second baseman, essentially made a diving 9-3 putout. After first baseman Stephen Cardullo mistimed his attempt, LeMahieu ran deep into right field for a diving stab, and followed with an even more impressive pop-up throw to first.

Third Base: Machado from his knees

One of the toughest plays in baseball is the throw from your knees. Manny Machado makes it look stupidly easy. The two-time Gold Glover made his case for a third with this ridiculous throw to nab the Yankees' Ronald Torreyes.

Shortstop: Andrelton's double play

We're running out of superlatives to describe Andrelton Simmons' fielding. There are many talented shortstops in baseball right now, but Simmons is probably the only one who could pull off this double play after running 72 feet into the outfield for a basket catch.

Left Field: Gardner commits robbery

The short fence at Angel Stadium allowed Brett Gardner to fly into the stands, nearly take out some fans, and steal a homer from C.J. Cron. Gardner's speed also helped, as he covered a ton of ground before making the spectacular catch.

Center Field: Billy Hamilton's dash

There's no ground big enough to contain Billy Hamilton. Cincinnati's speedster made a plethora of eye-popping plays in center field this year, but none of them demonstrated his abilities better than this catch in Houston. Despite breaking from short left-center field, Hamilton - running at a top speed of 20.4 mph - got to this ball in deep right before the Reds' actual right fielder.

Right Field: Mookie nabs Kevin

In case you weren't aware, Mookie Betts has a cannon. On this play, he adjusted as the Tropicana Field turf slowed the ball down, before firing a one-hopper to nab fellow Gold Glove nominee Kevin Kiermaier - who hopefully learned to never test Betts' arm again - at third.
