Man sentenced to prison for vandalizing Garza's Ferrari

A homeless man was sentenced Tuesday to four years in prison for damaging a $300,000 Ferrari owned by Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Matt Garza in April.

According to a report from the Fresno Bee, Garza's wife Serina saw Kenneth Ray Smith, 52, lurking near the detached garage of their Clovis, Calif., home. Garza's wife and children hid inside the home as Smith entered the garage by breaking a window and rifled through belongings.

Deputy Patrick Hanson said he found several "softball-sized rocks" inside the garage. The broken glass and rocks scratched the Ferrari and got into the car's intake system.

Garza wasn't at home when the incident occurred.

Smith offered to pay an estimated $25,000 in damage instead of serving prison time, but the judge reportedly got upset with him, saying his attitude implied the crime was harmless because of Garza's wealth.

"He earned those things," Judge Houry Sanderson told Smith. "You can't just say, 'It's mine' and help yourself to it."

Sanderson sentenced Smith to prison because of his "lack of desire to conform to society" and his unwillingness to accept responsibility.

Garza's home was investigated for a burglary in 2012, when the pitcher's 2008 American League Championship Series ring was stolen.
