The Miami Marlins covered the cost of former pitcher Jose Fernandez's funeral and cremation, sources confirmed to Tim Healey of the Sun Sentinel.

Fernandez was killed along with two other people in a boating accident Sept 25. His funeral, which was a private ceremony in Miami, was held four days later on Sept 29.

The Marlins also made a donation to St. Brendan Catholic Church in Miami after it held a public viewing and funeral.

Fernandez's death rocked the baseball community. The 24-year-old was one of the best young pitchers in the majors and one of the most well-liked players in both the league and the Miami community.

Authorities are still investigating the crash that led to his death.
