Report: Padres consider making Bethancourt super-utility player
Most teams have a utility player, but nobody has a super-utility player.
The San Diego Padres have catcher/outfielder Christian Bethancourt on the roster, and according to MLB.com's A.J. Cassavell, is considering adding innings on the mound to his repertoire.
This is just an idea, but Bethancourt has been throwing bullpen sessions and could serve as the first catcher/outfielder/pitcher in recent memory.
Bethancourt's last game was Aug. 30, before shutting it down for the year due to a left intercostal strain. But while he played only 73 games this season, he appeared all over the diamond.
The 25-year-old spent 41 games at catcher, 12 games in the outfield, two games at designated hitter, one game at second base, while getting two appearances on the mound.
In his only pitching performances, he went 1 2/3 innings, giving up one hit while walking three and striking out one.
This season, Bethancourt batted .228/.265/.368 with six homers and 25 RBI's.
