Report: White Sox expected to name Renteria manager Monday

Jerry Lai / USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago White Sox are expected to officially name Rick Renteria their new manager on Monday, a source told Jon Morosi of FOX Sports.

Renteria, who was hired by the White Sox at the start of the season to serve as the club's bench coach, will replace Robin Ventura.

It was reported late last week that the White Sox front office was prepared to offer an extension to Ventura should he wish to remain with the club. Ventura, however, announced Sunday that he won't return, citing the need for a new voice in the clubhouse.

Renteria's first and only season as a major-league manager came in 2014 with the Chicago Cubs. He went 73-89 before being unceremoniously relieved of his duties when the North Siders opted to hire Joe Maddon.

The White Sox stretched their postseason drought to eight seasons after wrapping up the year 78-84, good for a fourth-place finish in the division.

Renteria will be the fourth manager for the White Sox since 1998.
