Report: Weiss unlikely to return as Rockies manager

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Walt Weiss' days as manager of the Colorado Rockies are reportedly numbered.

Hours before the Rockies' final game of the season comes a report from Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post that says the 52-year-old manager is unlikely to return next season amid rumors of an increasing rift between the former major-league shortstop and general manager Jeff Bridich.

The report comes on the heels of a fourth straight losing season for the Rockies and Weiss, whose 283-363 record is believed to be only part of the reason for his expected dismissal. From Saunders:

A significant gulf has developed between Weiss and Bridich, according to multiple sources within the organization, some of whom said Weiss has been been left out of the loop regarding major decisions dating to the offseason - when he was not consulted about the acquisitions of relievers Jason Motte, Chad Qualls and Jason Motte or outfielder Gerardo Parra, all of whom have had disappointing seasons this year.

When reached for comment, Bridich told Saunders that he "didn’t think it was appropriate to publicly discuss my personal relationship with anyone on our staff."

Weiss, who's in the final year of his contract, managed the Rockies to their best result since 2010 this season, despite his .437 winning percentage over four years - the lowest of any manager in club history. Though Colorado stayed in contention for the postseason until the final month of the season, he told the Post there have been no discussions regarding an extension.

"It doesn't necessarily bug me," Weiss said. "I only want to be where I'm wanted. If I'm not wanted, I just leave. It's one of my rules in life. I don't stay anywhere where I'm not wanted. I just go, I just disappear. … I want to make sure that people want me, from top to bottom. If not, I don't want to be here."
