Cueto to undergo MRI after exiting with groin strain

The San Francisco Giants' attempt to hold onto the National League's second wild-card spot may have taken a drastic blow Tuesday as starter Johnny Cueto exited the sixth inning of a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers with a left groin strain.

Cueto appeared to injure himself initially running after a foul ball toward first base. He was visited on the mound by a trainer, threw practice pitches, and elected to stay in the game. However, after walking Dodgers outfielder Andrew Toles on seven pitches - the last a wild pitch in the dirt - the right-hander motioned for manager Bruce Bochy to remove him from the game.

Following the game, Cueto told reporters the injury compared to the feeling of "a crab going there and biting me." The 30-year-old will undergo an MRI to determine the extent of his injury; it's unclear if Cueto will be able to make his next scheduled start.

Cueto finished the night with six strikeouts, allowing eight hits in 5 1/3 innings while walking two. He was replaced by Steven Okert.
