Ross celebrates Cubs' division title at Chicago bar

While Chicago Cubs' players won't get to celebrate their division title until after Friday's game, catcher David Ross decided to get the party started early.

After hearing his team had officially won the division - thanks to a St. Louis Cardinals loss late Thursday - the veteran catcher, who was making his way home from a late-night workout, described his mini-celebration to 670 The Score Chicago.

"It was pretty low key,” Ross said on the Mully and Hanley Show on Friday morning. "I took the train in yesterday to the field, so afterward I got a little workout in to try and let the crowd clear out and walked home. I walked about halfway home and just kind of poked my head into the window of some of the bars and would check the (Cardinals-Giants) score and saw they had pretty comfortable lead. Then once we clinched and St. Louis lost, I walked into the bar, threw a shot back and hopped in a cab the rest of the way home. It was pretty uneventful."

The 39-year-old, who's beloved by his teammates and a fan-favorite in the city, has said he will retire at season's end.

"This is the last time I'll clinch a playoff berth and division title in my career," he said.

Ross also noted that he went largely unnoticed around Wrigleyville, despite a decent amount of fans buzzing from the good news.

"(Fans) had no idea. The bartender gave me a free shot. I guess he recognized me. I got a free shot from him and just kept on cruising. He actually took one with me, so it was a good little night, a good little alone thing I did. We’ll have a lot more celebrating going on after the game today," he said.
